Try this style on your photoMost types of jeans fall into six leg shapes. The name on the label changes from shop to shop, but the shape of the leg from thigh to hem is what you see in a photo.
Fit is how close the jeans sit to the body; cut is the line of the leg; style is everything else — wash, rips, rise and length.
| Leg shape | Hip and thigh | Knee to hem | Types of jeans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close | Follows the leg | Narrow all the way down | Skinny, Slim, Cigarette |
| Straight | Some room | Even width to the hem | Straight, Relaxed, Boyfriend |
| Tapered | Roomy | Narrows to the ankle | Tapered, Mom |
| Curved | Roomy, rounded | Bows out at the knee, tapers in | Barrel |
| Flared | Fitted | Opens out from the knee | Bootcut, Flare |
| Wide | Loose | Wide from hip to hem | Wide leg, Baggy |
The rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. The same leg shape looks different at low, mid or high rise, so many fits come in more than one.

Sits lower on the hips. A relaxed, laid-back look.
Common in baggy and some bootcut styles; filter by rise in the try-on.

Sits around the natural waist. An everyday option.
Usually: Slim, Tapered, Relaxed, Baggy, Bootcut, Boyfriend, Stacked, Cargo.

Sits at or above the natural waist. A longer leg line.

Cropped jeans end above the ankle and show your shoes; full-length jeans reach the shoe, and baggy styles stack on top of it. The length changes the proportions of the whole outfit.
Your photo cannot determine an exact inseam. The try-on shows how the jeans look, not a guaranteed length or fit.

Hems at or below the shoe for a long line.
Usually: Skinny, Slim, Straight, Tapered, Relaxed, Wide leg, Baggy, Barrel, Bootcut, Flare, Bell bottom, Pleated, Stacked, Cargo.

Light, mid and dark wash
There is no fixed number — brands invent new names every season. Most jeans fall into six leg shapes: close, straight, tapered, curved, flared and wide. Our catalog has 14 women’s and 11 men’s fits across them.
Fit is how close the jeans sit to your body, cut is the shape of the leg from thigh to hem, and style covers the rest: wash, rips, rise and length. Shops often use the words interchangeably.
Skinny, straight, bootcut and baggy exist in both, cut on different patterns: men’s jeans are usually mid rise and straighter through the hip, women’s are more often high rise.
It depends on the look you want more than on any rule. The quickest way to decide is to see two or three fits on the same photo of yourself and compare them side by side.
